Job Summary/Basic Function

The Department of Public Safety seeks qualified applicants for the position of Clerk 2 that will have primary responsibilities for daily dispatcher operations on the 4:00 p.m. to Midnight Monday through Friday shift.

The dispatcher acts as the first point of contact for the public when calling or entering the University Law enforcement headquarters; performs work related to receiving/disseminating information to the public, law enforcement and security personnel; provides data entry/retrieval for the department’s various automated systems; monitors and responds to fire and security alarms and to emergency calls;
receives, records and services all incoming calls from officers, staff, students and the public, calling for police assistance or general information; maintain log of all calls to include date/time of call, origin of call and type of call; relay information to officers as needed; dispatches the officers in response to calls and emergencies; relays instructions, orders and information requiring knowledge of department policies, practices, procedures and reporting; maintains status checks on officers on duty.

The dispatcher also prepares incident reports which typically consist of pertinent information such as date, time, name, address, telephone number of caller, location of incident; assists in performing other office support work as needed, based on the operational demands of the department including but not limited to preparing monthly accomplishment reports from status reports.

Required Qualifications

Qualified applicants must have a knowledge of standard office procedures, practices, conduct, and actions necessary in maintaining harmonious working relationships.

Knowledge of standard office procedures and practices such as the types, organization, and use of standard office files, logs, forms, and letter formats.

Knowledge of intermediate arithmetic which involves calculations similar to adding and subtracting common fractions; and multiplying and dividing by two or more digits, whole numbers, or decimal multipliers and divisors.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions which explain multifaceted procedures.

Six months’ experience as a Clerk 1 or completion of a high school business curriculum.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience as a professional dispatcher.

Applicants must complete a successful on campus interview. Prior to employment the successful candidate will be required to obtain and submit current clearances from the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services, Pennsylvania State Police and the FBI.
